Sheriff warns public of scammer posing as CCSO investigator

Cherokee County Sheriff Jason Chennault said his office has received several calls from residents who say an investigator said they owe a fine for missing a court date.

On Wednesday, July 24, Chennault said a man posing as an investigator with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is calling potential victims from a 918-area code. The man identifies himself as Sgt. Robbie Haggard.

"These calls are a scam, I have no employee named Robbie Haggard," Chennault said.

"Haggard" is trying to obtain money by telling victims they missed a court date and now must pay a fine through the app, Venmo.

"These telephone calls from 'Sgt. Haggard' are a scam. If you get a telephone call from 'Sgt. Haggard' or any similar types of telephone calls that you believe may not be legitimate, please call CCSO at 918-456-2583 and we will be happy [to] help you determine the legitimacy of the call," Chennault said.

Reminder, no law enforcement agency will call to collect money through financial apps nor gift cards. Fines can be paid at the Cherokee County Courthouse or online.
