An intoxicated woman was arrested twice in less than 15 hours and reportedly tried fighting a pregnant woman.
On July 28, Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy Austin Carver responded to State Highway 82 and West Woodard Road just before 9 p.m. to conduct a welfare check. Dispatch advised that Cheryl Akins got into an argument with a man and allegedly tried jumping out of a vehicle. Deputies met with the victim at the Log Store North. He said Akins took his phone before she got out of the vehicle and took off on foot. Deputy Justin Richardson located Akins in a ditch nearby. He said the woman had a strong odor of alcohol on her person. Akins reportedly became irate and was non-compliant with deputies. She was placed in a restraint chair at the jail and booked for public intoxication. Around 11:40 a.m. the next morning, Deputy Billy Jackson was dispatched to East Hogner Street for report of a fight in progress. The caller said an intoxicated woman "jumped" her daughter and the two were physically fighting in her yard. Capt. Derrick Grant and a Cherokee Nation Marshal were on scene and arrested the woman, Akins. The victim said her husband awoke to "some chick" in the bed of his truck. The victim said Akins was drinking a beer and refused to get out of the truck. The victim, who was pregnant, said she tried helping Akins out of the bed of the truck, but Akins fell. She said Akins came at her and a family member tackled the woman. The two women tried to restrain Akins but she was able to get loose. She said Akins grabbed the woman's dog and allegedly hurt the animal before Grant showed up. Akins was reportedly belligerent and kicked the cage in Grant's patrol unit. She was placed in a restraint chair a second time and detention officers said she had been released at 4 a.m. that morning. Akins was booked for assault and battery and public intoxication.
On July 29, Lt. Tanner Hendley was dispatched to the area of State Highway 82 and West Chicken Creek Road due to a possible intoxicated driver. Dispatch advised that the suspected vehicle was a silver Mustang with California plates. Hendley observed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, Chase Austin Lyles, appeared under the influence and denied consuming alcohol, but admitted to smoking marijuana. The man was asked to exit the vehicle and Hendley noted that he was unsteady on his feet. Lyles was arrested after a field sobriety test and transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center. Hendley said the arrestee began growling "like a zombie" and kicked the door of his patrol unit. Lyles was booked for driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, and no driver's license.
