Sequoyah Co. deputy hit, injured while assisting OHP with fatal crash

A deputy was struck by a vehicle and injured as he was directing traffic near a fatal crash that killed an Oregon man.


According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, Robert Jaramillo, 38, was driving a 1998 Ford Taurus on I-40, three miles west of Vian in Sequoyah County when the crash occurred. Jaramillo was pinned for nearly an hour and pronounced dead at the scene.


An unidentified driver of the second vehicle was airlifted to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa and admitted in critical condition with head, trunk internal and leg injuries. The driver was also pinning for nearly an hour.


According to additional reports, Deputy Duwaine Chase with the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office was directing traffic near the scene and was struck by a vehicle. Chase was listed in critical condition.


According to the OHP, what happened and the cause of the crash are under investigation.
