Man accused off shooting Webbers Falls officer arrested in New Mexico
Billy Wayne Williams was arrested Monday, March 17 after he was located in a Walmart parking lot in Grants, New Mexico.
According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, a Webbers Falls officer conducted a traffic stop near East Lynch Street and North Smith Street on Sunday, March 16. Williams, 46, was accused of shooting the officer during the traffic stop and fled the scene. The officer was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and later released.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol issued a Blue Alert for Williams and a search involving multiple law enforcement agencies was underway. Williams was considered armed and dangerous, and the public was advised to not approach him and to call 911.
The OHP believed Williams was driving a white suburban, but the vehicle was located and it was reported that he was driving a white Nissan Altima.
Around 7:45 a.m., the Grants Police Department used its Flock Safety License Place Reader and determined that the Altima was captured by the camera.
According to a press release by GPD, officers located the vehicle parked at Walmart. The vehicle was occupied by Williams.
"The Grants Police Department, with the assistance of the Milan Police Department, Cibola County Sheriff's Office, and the New Mexico State Police, attempted contact the suspect. A single gunshot was heard, which was later determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot from the suspect," the press release stated.
Williams was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition. The Federal Bueau of Investigation has taken over the case due to to Williams' tribal status. He is now federally charged with assault to commit murder in Indian Country and attempted murder in Indian Country.
