Hulbert High School senior serves as page for Culver's office
OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Bob Ed Culver, R-Tahlequah, met with Hulbert High School Senior Brock Julian to serve as a page in his Capitol office.
Julian is a state Future Farmers of America degree recipient, president of the Hulbert FFA, the secretary of his school's National Honor Society and on his school's Honor Roll. He's a Cherokee County 4-H representative. He plays on his varsity golf team and serves on the Student Council Executive Committee. His parents are Darrin and Donna Julian.
He plans to attend Oklahoma State University to major in agricultural education and communications. Culver said Julian hopes to work with a rural FFA chapter and eventually run for legislative office.
White at the Capitol, Julian got to sit in on some committee meetings and floor sessions, and took part in a mock legislative session with fellow pages.
"This is such a great experience for young people to learn about state government," Culver said.
Leadership Tahlequah visited the Capitol. The Tahlequah Chamber of Commerce runs this program to get people civically engaged and to equip business members with tools to become leaders in the community.
"It was good to meet with the participants and get to recognize them from the House floor," Culver said.
This week was the deadline for bills to be heard in oversight committee. Those that passed are now eligible to be heard on the House floor.
"We'll have until March 27 to pass House bills off the floor and get them over the Senate. After that, we'll start considering Senate bills in committee and then on the floor. If a bill did not pass out of an oversight committee it can't be considered again until next year," Culver said.
Culver said they held Transportation Day at the Capitol this week. District engineers and other transportation leaders and industry professionals met with legislators to discuss the Department of Transportation's eight-year construction work plan, funding and policy issues. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority also had staff available to answer questions and provide details on their work throughout the state.
March 4 was Medicine Day, which gave physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals the opportunity to meet with legislators and discuss pending legislation and its potential impact on their profession.
"March 3 was Senior Advocacy Day. We had many agencies and nonprofit organizations set up to show us what they offer for aging Oklahomans," Culver said.
Anyone needing assistance from Culver are asked to call his Capitol office at 405-557-7408 or email him at bob.culver@okhouse.gov.
