OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Bob Ed Culver, R-Tahlequah, said things are moving a bit slower in the House now that they've moved House bills over to the Senate.

"We have until April 10 to hear Senate bills in their initial policy committees or an Appropriations & Budget subcommittee, but the committee schedule this week was pretty light. We'll either be hearing a lot of bills in committee next week, or we won't be considering that many Senate bills this session," Culver said.

On Monday, March 31, they adopted House Resolution 1011, which recognized April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Oklahoma. This resolution acknowledges the importance of raising awareness about child abuse prevention and taking collective action to protect Oklahoma’s children and strengthen families.

In Oklahoma, there were 13,546 substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect, with 10,525 of those involving first-time victims.

"While these are horrible statistics to report, it's important to note Oklahoma's numbers are actually declining in this area, and that's good news. Still, we have be very watchful for signs of child abuse and report any that we witness. We also are encouraged to do a better job of supporting parents and families in raising healthier children in safe environments. Child abuse can be prevented, but it will take all of us to make this happen," Culver said.

Another important recognition was for Autism Advocacy Day at the State Capitol, which was held Thursday, April 3.

This day honored autism advocates and emphasized the need for continued support of individuals on the autism spectrum.

"This day helps Oklahomans understand the challenges faced by those who have autism and by those who help care for these individuals. Advocates say the day is essential for creating a more inclusive Oklahoma where everyone has the opportunity to succeed," Culver said.

Oklahoma Film and Music Day recognized the economic contributions of the film and music industry in the state, and gave Culver all a glimpse of just how many projects there are throughout the state.

"I still remember when 'Where the Red Fern Grows' and the remake were shot in Tahlequah. We've also had several other movies filmed here, including 'Wildfire: The Legend of the Cherokee Ghost Horse,' and 'The Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy,' among others," Culver said.

Aero Day was Wednesday, April 2, and Culver said it highlighted the contributions of the aerospace and aeronautics industry in Oklahoma.

"This is the state's second largest industry behind energy, with an estimated annual economic impact of about $44 billion from 11,000 companies that employee more than 74,000 people," Culver said.

Anyone needing assistance from Culver are asked to call his Capitol office at 405-557-7408 or email him at bob.culver@okhouse.gov.
