BREAKING: Inmate's death under investigation, no foul play suspected
Cherokee County Sheriff Jason Chennault said a 33-year-old man died Friday, Dec. 13 after a medical episode at the detention center.
The inmate was housed in a one-person isolation cell at the Cherokee County Detention Center when he experienced a medical episode.
"Detention officers attempted life-saving measures and called for assistance from emergency medical services. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful," Chennault said.
The death is being investigated by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner, and was reported to the State of Oklahoma jail inspector and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation as required by Oklahoma law.
"The inmate’s name cannot be released. CCSO has not yet been able to notify the inmate’s family. The inmate’s next of kin, his mother, passed away while the inmate was recently in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections," Chennault said.
